Thomas Samuel Gent was born in 1894 at Kingston the son of His Honour, Judge John Gent, a County Court Judge, and Harriet Frankland Gent of Little Sutton, Thorkhill Road, Thames Ditton. He was christened at St Paul's Church, Kingston Hill on the 12th of May, 1894.

He was educated at Shrewsbury House Preparatory House and then attended Rossall School from 1907 to 1913.

He was killed in action on the 24th of June 1915 near Hooge Crater; he was 21.
