John Bailey Carter was born in 1898, the son of John Carter and Louise Carter. He was baptised on the 9th of December 1898.

John was a boarder at Shrewsbury House in 1911.

He served with the East Surrey Regiment during the war and was awarded the Order of the Redeemer - Knight, which he received from Greece during the First World War. This was gazetted on the 24th of October 1919.
